How Can Home Automation Systems Create Energy Savings?

Home automation has taken massive leaps and bounds in the past few years, becoming more and more accessible to the average homeowner. There is no better time than now to add home automation to your house. Home automation not only adds convenience, but can also result in noticeable energy savings.

Lighting Savings

One of the most common home automation options is to install smart lighting. Smart lighting can be achieved through replacing the switch, or replacing the bulb itself. Smart lighting allows you to access remote access services through a smart phone or internet enabled device to turn a light on or off. Lights can also be programmed to come on and off at certain times. This is especially useful with exterior lighting, as it can be programmed to come on with sunset, and off with sunrise, resulting in savings.

Other automation options with lighting including adding the ability to dim lights. When dimmed, lights use less electricity, meaning you save money. You may also install smart motion detecting sensors in a room, allowing lights to turn on when you enter, and off when you leave.

Heating Savings

Smart thermostats can lead to massive savings on your heating bills. How often do you remember to turn down the thermostat when you leave home? Many home automation smart thermostat systems use remote access services to know when you are home, and when you are away, and adjust the temperature accordingly. This can not only result in massive energy savings, but also makes sure that when you arrive back home, the heat has already come back on, and your house warmed back up.

Smart Plugs

When anything is left plugged in, there is a slight constant draw of electricity. When you have many things plugged in, this can add up. Smart plugs have wireless connectivity and block the flow of electricity to whatever is plugged into it. They can also be set to turn on and off on a schedule, perfect for christmas lights, televisions or car heaters. Many of these also give you an energy consumption report, alerting you to what is using too much energy, which could lead to changes resulting in energy savings.

With the availability, convenience, and energy savings that home automation offers, there has never been a better time to upgrade your home.
