How Safe is Burlington, Ontario?
Burlington, Ontario is a beautiful city in southern Ontario on the northwestern edge of Lake Ontario. Burlington was rated by McLean’s as the best place to live in Canada and the best place to raise children. With a population of about 183,000, Burlington lies between Hamilton and Mississauga and about an hour’s drive south of Toronto.
However, as Shakespeare wrote in The Merchant of Venice, “All that glitters is not gold.” Burlington still has some crime.
Let’s have a look at the crime rate in Burlington.
We can examine that latest published crime statistics from the Halton Regional Police Service, which covers Burlington, and those statistics show the numbers for both 2017 and 2018. Most crime, including violent crime went down.
But we have to be careful when we’re interpreting statistics. For example, in 2017 there was one murder in Burlington, and in 2018, there were none.
The rate per 100,000 in 2017 was 0.6 and the 2018 rate per 100,000 was 0.0. Clearly, there’s no such thing as 0.6 of a homicide, and we know that there are some homicides in Canada, so we wouldn’t interpret these numbers to mean there was a homicide in Burlington in 2017 and no homicides anywhere in Canada in 2018. Statistics Canada says there were 651 homicides in Canada in 2018.
There were two notable types of crimes that went up in Burlington between 2017 and 2018: sexual assault and abduction/forcible confinement.
Sexual assault went up over 10%, and abduction/forcible confinement went up over 57%. So, the point we’re trying to make is that even in really wonderful cities, crime still exists, and getting a good security system with video surveillance is a good idea.
Get a security system before you’re the victim of a crime.
