Are Wireless Security Systems Good Enough for Businesses?

There is no doubt that all kinds of tech systems are moving toward wireless technology. For example, in the 1990’s all office PC’s were wired to their printers, mouse, and other peripheral devices. Today, most offices have PC’s that communicate wirelessly with peripheral devices. The same is true for security systems.

While there are some distinct advantages to security systems that are hard-wired, the general trend is for more and more equipment to be available for wireless use. That same holds true for both residential and commercial security systems.

Let’s take a brief look at the wireless implications of a security system for a business.

1. While wireless systems can suffer from interference, it takes a serious hacker to shut down your security system. With a hard-wired security system, the traditional idiot criminal with a pair of wire cutters can shut down your security system with one snip.

2. Wireless systems are usually easier (and cheaper) to install, and they’re more portable. A security professional is not going to uninstall an old hard-wired system to help you take it to a new location—you’ll have to start fresh with new wiring.

3. Wireless systems are usually easier to operate remotely from other locations like a remote guarding office that’s running 24/7. Wireless security systems don’t typically have a central unit or “brain” on location that is vulnerable to criminal activity because this is off-site.

Whether you choose a wireless or hard-wired security system is a decision that you should make in consultation with your security provider. It’s a big decision, and it will depend on a lot of factors that are specific to your business. Wireless systems do have some disadvantages, and, if, for example, your business location has several layers of security—such as being located in a high-rise building with limited access and security personnel on-site—then a hard-wired system might be a better choice for you.
